11 Best Headphones For Swimming- The 2021 Expert Review

It’s no secret that swimming is one of the best full-body workouts you can do, that said as a regular team swimmer, I know just how boring swimming alone can be- constantly staring at the black line on the pool bottom as you swim laps up and down hundreds of times over until you finally reach the end of your workout.

One sure way to spice up your swimming workouts and add some extra entertainment is by listening to music, podcasts, or audiobooks while you swim.

That said, generally, electronics and water don’t go together too well. That’s why it’s important to invest in some good swimming headphones. This will ensure that you get both good durability and sound quality underwater while also ensuring your headphones stay in place while swimming.

Swimming headphones work by connecting to an external MP3 player strapped to your goggles or by using a built-in MP3 player within the device itself. These devices can’t be used with Bluetooth as a Bluetooth connection can’t be carried through the water. That said, some of these swimming headphones are still Bluetooth compatible in case you’d like to use them outside of the pool as well.

1. Swimbuds Delphin Micro Tablet Swimming Headphones And Tracker.

SwimBuds Delphin Swimming Headphones

The Swimbuds Delphin Micro Tablet Combo is one of the most advanced swimming headphone devices currently available. What separates this device from others is the fact that it doesn’t just offer your standard MP3 music streaming, but also allows you to listen directly from some of the most popular audio streaming services such as Spotify, Pandora, and Audible. (Also compatible with many other streaming services).

Swimming Headphones Design: This bundle includes the Delphin Micro Tablet and your choice of either the SwimBuds Sport Swimming Headphones or the SwimBuds HydroActive Swimming Headphones.

The Delphin Micro Tablet is compact and streamlined for swimming purposes as well as 100% waterproof with an IPX8 rating. It also offers Wi-Fi and Bluetooth compatibility allowing you to separately use the device outside of the water for other purposes as well.

The Micro Tablet offers 6 hours of battery life and has onboard storage of either 8GB or 16GB depending on which model you decide to pick. The entire micro-tablet is also encased within a rugged shock housing for added durability and features a high-quality metal clip at the back allowing you to securely strap the device to your swimming goggles.

Additionally, the device features 5 easy-to-use raised buttons, ultimately making the use of the device while swimming seamless and easy.

As mentioned, for the swimming headphones you have a choice between the SwimBuds Sport Or SwimBuds HydroActive headphones. Both of these models are great and are some of the most popular swimming headphones on the market delivering a lightweight 100% waterproof design with great underwater audio as well.

You’ll also receive 11 different earbud options ensuring that you have both a perfect fit as well as many extra earbuds if you ever need them.

Audio Profiles: Unlike other swimming headphones, the Delphin Micro Tablet isn’t an MP3 player (although it works similarly), but rather an actual micro-tablet, as the name suggests.

The device has an Android 5.1 operating system, allowing you to actively install apps such as Spotify or Audible directly on your micro-tablet without the need for an external computer. The Android operating system is a bit outdated compared to modern devices, but will nevertheless still work great for swimming purposes.

If you are someone who will like to easily stream music without the hassle of setting it up through your computer first then this is going to be great. We should also mention that you won’t be able to listen to Audiobooks from certain services such as Audible on a standard MP3 player as they don’t support the same file formats. That’s why the Swimbuds Delphin is a great way to ensure easy streaming of whichever audio format you’d like to listen to.

Keep in mind, similar to other MP3 swimming headphones you will have to download the playlist that you want to listen to at home as Wi-Fi connectivity, similar to Bluetooth, won’t work underwater.

Nevertheless, this is still much easier and faster than some of the other MP3 swimming headphones as those will have to be connected to your computer first to transfer the MP3 music files.

Additional Features: What’s more is that the Delphin Micro Tablet offers an onboard lap tracking feature. This allows you to count your laps and split-times while swimming for some more detailed insights into your training. Your workouts can be synced to Strava while the device also offers real-time voice feedback as you swim.

Generally swim trackers are expensive on their own so the fact that you get a basic swim tracker with your swimming headphones is a huge bonus. Additionally, we’ve found the on-board swim tracker to be quite accurate only being off between 100-200 meters after a long swimming workout.

Additionally, your Delphin Swimbuds Headphones will come in a very nice storage box with different compartments to keep your headphones, earbuds, and micro-tablet. Your headphones will also receive a separate carry case as well.

Downsides: The only downside of the SwimBuds Delphin Micro Tablet Swimming Headphones is its price point. This device is quite a bit more expensive than any of the other devices on our list. That said if you have a little extra to spend we highly recommend this device as it is, in our opinion, easily one of your best options.

2. FINIS Duo Bone Conduction MP3 Swimming Headphones.

FINIS Duo bone conduction swimming headphones

If you are looking solely for some great, high-quality swimming headphones then the FINIS Duo is one of your best options. The FINIS Duo comes in at a slightly lower price than the Swimbuds Delphin and is also one of the most popular swimming headphones currently available.

Swimming Headphones Design: The FINIS Duo utilizes a slightly different headphone design featuring bone-conduction technology instead of using earbuds as your typical headphones do.

This works by transmitting sound waves through the cheekbones to the inner ear allowing for crystal clear audio underwater, without the use of earbuds.

What I like about the FINIS Duo swimming headphones is their sleek and streamlined design. The headphones clip onto the side of your goggles allowing for a comfortable, secure, and hydrodynamic fit that won’t interfere with your swimming. Additionally, it only weighs 150 grams making it barely noticeable.

Similar to the SwimBuds Delphin the Finis DUO has an IPX8 waterproof rating ensuring that your swimming headphones have good durability and will be able to withstand the test of time in the water.

The device also features a rechargeable battery offering around 7 hours of playback time as well as easy to use buttons to control your audio while swimming.

Audio  Profiles: The FINIS Duo has a built-in MP3 player with a total of 4GB of storage. This should allow you to store roughly 1000 songs or around 60 hours of playback which should be more than enough to keep you entertained while swimming.

The FINIS DUO is compatible with MP3 and WMA audio formats which can be uploaded to your device from your computer. It also supports iTunes allowing you to listen to music, audiobooks, podcasts, and more. Unfortunately, unlike the SwimBuds Delphin, it doesn’t support other streaming services as well.

Downsides: a Potential downside to the FINIS DUO is the fact that the device is purely designed for swimming purposes, which means that you won’t be able to use it outside of the pool with good audio quality as it works best underwater. It also doesn’t offer Bluetooth connectivity. That said, if you are looking for a purely swimming headphone this is going to be a great option.

Swimming Headphone Quick Specifications-

  • Headphone Design: Bone-Conduction.
  • Onboard MP3 Player: Yes.
  • Audio Profiles: MP3, WMA, iTunes Compatibility.
  • Waterproof Rating: IPX8.
  • Storage: 4GB.
  • Battery-Life: 7 Hours.
  • Rechargeable: Yes.
  • Bluetooth Connectivity: No.

3. AfterShokz Xtrainerz Bone Conduction Mp3 Swimming Headphones.

AfterShokz Xtrainerz Bone Conduction Swimming Headphones

The AfterShokz Xtrainers MP3 Swimming Headphones is another great headphone option for swimmers as well as triathletes. It delivers many similar features compared to the FINIS Duo swimming headphones, but also has a few extra packed into its design. Additionally, it does also come in at a slightly higher price point.

Swimming Headphones Design: Similar to the FINIS Duo the AfterShokz Xtrainers also utilizes bone conduction technology to deliver audio through the cheekbone allowing for clear audio underwater.

What’s great about the Xtrainers, however, is that these are also designed for out of water usage meaning you can use them on other workouts such as running or cycling as well. The benefit to this is the fact that the bone-conduction technology will allow you to listen to your favorite songs while staying aware of your surroundings wherever you may be.

That said, due to this the AfterShokz Xtrainers features a slightly different fitting design than most other swimming headphones since they are designed for out-of-water usage as well. These swimming headphones clip over your ear rather than onto your goggles. This allows for a comfortable and secure fit both in and out of the pool.

These swimming headphones also feature an IPX8 waterproof rating as well as offering a rechargeable battery with an 8-hour battery life making them perfect for swimming and other cross-training workouts as well.

Additionally, you’ll also receive a nice silicone storage case for your headphones to keep them in when they are not in use.

Audio Profiles: The AfterShokz Xtrainer swimming headphones feature a built-in MP3 player with 4GB of storage. This allows you to store up to 1200 songs. The device supports MP3 audio files which can be uploaded to the device via your computer. If your audio files aren’t currently in MP3 format you can use free MP3 conversion tools online to make them compatible with your device.

Downsides: Unlike some of the other swimming headphones on our list the AfterShokz Xtrainers are a bit limited in terms of audio profiles. The device doesn’t support any streaming services and neither does it offer Bluetooth connectivity, but that is to be expected from a swimming headphone.

Swimming Headphone Quick Specifications-

  • Headphone Design: Bone-Conduction.
  • Onboard MP3 Player: Yes.
  • Audio Profiles: MP3.
  • Waterproof Rating: IPX8.
  • Storage: 4GB.
  • Battery-Life: 8 Hours.
  • Rechargeable: Yes.
  • Bluetooth Connectivity: No.

4. Sony NWWS413BM 4GB Sports Wearable MP3 Player.

Sony NWWS413BM Swimming Headphones

The Sony Waterproof MP3 headphones are another great pair of headphones that can be used both for swimming as well as other land-based workouts. These headphones have a similar look and feel compared to the FINIS Duo and AfterShokz Xtrainers, but instead of utilizing bone conduction technology, they feature in-ear buds. Additionally, they come in at a slightly lower price as well.

Swimming Headphones Design: As mentioned the Sony NWWS413BM headphones feature an in-ear bud design and come with specific buds for swim-based and land-based workouts. With this headphone, it is important to use the right set of earbuds when you are in the water to avoid water damage to the speakers as well as to ensure good audio while swimming.

The headphones feature an ergonomic and streamlined design that provides both good comfort as well as a secure fit no matter what workout you are doing- whether it be swimming, running, boxing, cycling, or anything else for that matter.

These headphones also feature a rechargeable battery with 12 hours of playback time which is the longest we’ve seen so far between the models that we’ve covered. Additionally, they feature an IPX8 waterproof rating while also being suitable for use in fresh or saltwater pools.

What’s more, is the fact that these headphones are designed for great durability also featuring a sweat and dustproof design. Additionally, they also have an ambient noise function built-in allowing you to stay aware of what’s going on around you while working out, whether it be in a pool or on land.

Audio Profiles: The Sony NWWS413BM headphones feature a wide array of audio profiles such as MP3, WMA, AAC, and Linear PCM files. Transferring files is easy and can be done by simply dragging and dropping them from your computer files to the device files.

Like most of the other devices, these headphones also feature a built-in MP3 player with 4GB of storage allowing you to store anywhere from 1000-1200 songs on your device.

Downsides: A potential downside to this device is the fact that you must use specific swimming ear-buds when you go swimming (these are supplied in the box). If you forget to put these on before hopping in the pool there is a chance that your headphones will receive water damage and won’t work properly anymore.

Swimming Headphone Quick Specifications-

  • Headphone Design: In-Ear Buds.
  • Onboard MP3 Player: Yes.
  • Audio Profiles: iTunes, MP3, WMA, AAC, Linear PCM Audio Files.
  • Waterproof Rating: IPX8.
  • Storage: 4GB.
  • Battery-Life: 12 Hours.
  • Rechargeable: Yes, Quick Charge Available- 3-minute charge = 1-hour playback.
  • Bluetooth Connectivity: No.

5. Swimbuds Flip Swimming Headphones.

SwimBuds Flip Swimming Headphones

Coming in at a slightly more budget price while still offering great features and functionality is the Swimbuds Flip Swimming Headphones. These headphones are designed specifically for swimming and offer great audio in the water.

Swimming Headphones Design: The SwimBuds Flip swimming headphones feature an in-ear bud design that works with an external waterproof MP3 player. These headphones come standard with the SYRYN Waterproof MP3 player which is one of the best waterproof swimming MP3 players currently available.

The headphones themselves offer great underwater audio while the SYRYN waterproof MP3 player seamlessly clips onto your goggle strap to ensure a lightweight and streamline feel while swimming.

Additionally, this device offers great battery life with up to 10 hours of playback time. The device also has an IPX8 waterproof rating ensuring maximal durability in the pool. What’s more is that you’ll receive a 1-year warranty as well, protecting you against any manufacturer defects.

Audio Profiles: The waterproof SYRYN MP3 player is easy to use with drag and drop functionality built-in. The device supports all popular audio formats, namely MP3, AAC, WAV, and WMA. The device also offers compatibility for iTunes in the form of its AAC files we just discussed.

In total, the device features 8GB of storage which is more than the devices which have the MP3 directly built-in. This storage capacity should allow you to store around 2000 songs which is more than enough to get you through any tough swimming workout.

Another neat feature this device offers is auto-shuffling, which will play songs in random order ensuring that your playlist always stays interesting without the need of manually changing up your songs every once in a while.

Downsides: A potential downside to this device is the fact that the MP3 player is separate and attaches to the back of your goggles, rather than being built into the headphones themselves. Nevertheless, the compact design shouldn’t interfere with your swimming too much.

Swimming Headphone Quick Specifications-

  • Headphone Design: In-Ear Buds.
  • Onboard MP3 Player: Yes, Attaches Externally.
  • Audio Profiles: MP3, AAC, WAV, WMA, iTunes Compatible.
  • Waterproof Rating: IPX8.
  • Storage: 8GB.
  • Battery-Life: 10 Hours.
  • Rechargeable: Yes.
  • Bluetooth Connectivity: No.

6. H2O Audio Stream 2 MP3 Swimming Headphones.

H2O Audio Stream 2 Swimming Headphones

The H2O Audio Stream 2 swimming headphones are very similar to the SwimBuds flip swimming headphones, both in terms of design and price. These headphones are slightly less popular than the SwimBuds Flip swimming headphones but still offer great features and audio while swimming.

Swimming Headphones Design: Like the SwimBuds Flip the H2O Audio Stream 2 features an in-ear bud headphone design connected to an easy to use external MP3 player that clips on to the back of your goggles.

The swimming headphones themselves offer superior sound quality underwater with deep amplified bass qualities as well. Additionally, the headphones are patented with a seal-tight jack ensuring no USB connection errors occur while maximizing the device’s durability by cutting down on corrosion.

The MP3 player itself features a 100% waterproof design with an IPX8 rating. The device is also highly hydrodynamic ensuring that you can swim without interruption. The exterior of the MP3 player also features easy-to-use buttons allowing you to quickly and easily choose what you want to listen to while swimming. Additionally, you’ll receive a great battery life with around 10 hours of playtime.

Audio Profiles: Like many of the other devices on our list the H2O Audio stream 2 also offers the easy drag and drop functionality allowing you to quickly upload your songs directly to your device.

The MP3 player supports all popular audio formats such as MP3, WMA, FLAC, APE, as well as iTunes files. One feature, however, that separates this device from the popular SwimBuds Flip and other swimming headphones is the fact that it also offers Bluetooth functionality for out of water usage.

The device features a total of 8GB of storage allowing you to store roughly 2000 songs and it also features the neat shuffle feature similar to the SwimBuds Flip swimming headphones.

Downsides: Same as the SwimBuds Flip these headphones feature an external MP3 player that attaches to the back of the goggles. Some swimmers may find this to be inferior compared to swimming headphones which have the MP3 player directly built-in. That said, this is a matter of preference.

Swimming Headphone Quick Specifications-

  • Headphone Design: In-Ear Buds.
  • Onboard MP3 Player: Yes, Attaches Externally.
  • Audio Profiles: MP3, WMA, FLAC, APE. Out of water- Spotify, Pandora, iTunes, etc.
  • Waterproof Rating: IPX8.
  • Storage: 8GB.
  • Battery-Life: 10 Hours.
  • Rechargeable: Yes.
  • Bluetooth Connectivity: Yes.

7. SwimBuds All-In-One MP3 Wearable Swimming Headphones.

SwimBuds All-In-One Wearable Swimming Headphones

If you are both a fan of the SwimBuds headphone brand and the wearable built-in MP3 style swimming headphones then the SwimBuds MP3 swimming headphones are going to be a great option for you while coming in at a good and affordable price point.

Swimming Headphones Design: The SwimBuds MP3 swimming headphones feature an in-ear bud style with the MP3 player directly built into the device- no need for an external MP3 player to clip onto the back of your goggles while swimming.

The headphones feature an IPX8 waterproof rating while also offering 7 hours of battery life. On the exterior, you’ll locate easy-to-use buttons allowing you to control your music playback while swimming.

What’s great about these headphones is the fact that you’ll also be able to use them for other workouts as well such as running, cycling or dry-land for example. That said, we should mention that these don’t offer Bluetooth connectivity for streaming music from your phone, but with their 8GB storage size capable of holding over 2000 songs this shouldn’t be too much of a problem.

Additionally, you’ll also receive 11 pairs of earbuds coming in 4 different styles ensuring you find the perfect fit while also having enough spares for future usage. Another feature that I quite like is the separate goggle strap that can be used with your device to keep it secured in place while swimming.

Audio Profiles: The SwimBuds All-In-One Wearable MP3 swimming headphones support all popular audio formats such as MP3, AAC, and FLAC. Additionally, you’ll also be able to easily transfer files from iTunes onto your device.

Downsides: From a design perspective, I don’t see much fault with these. However, all of our reviews are carefully put together using real-world feedback. On this particular device, we’ve found that some swimmers have a hard time finding the right fit. That said, we recommend using a swimming cap while using these headphones to avoid them from moving around.

Keep in mind, these headphones are also adjustable (as are all the other models), so you may just have to play around a bit with the adjustability to find a nice fit for you.

Swimming Headphone Quick Specifications-

  • Headphone Design: In-Ear Buds.
  • Onboard MP3 Player: Yes.
  • Audio Profiles: MP3, AAC, FLAC, iTunes-Compatible.
  • Waterproof Rating: IPX8.
  • Storage: 8GB.
  • Battery-Life: 7 Hours.
  • Rechargeable: Yes.
  • Bluetooth Connectivity: No.

8. Pyle MP3 Bluetooth Swimming Headphones.

Pyle Bluetooth MP3 Swimming Headphones

The Pyle all-in-one MP3 Bluetooth swimming headphones are one of the best value for money swimming headphones that you can find coming in at a very affordable budget price while still offering good features and functionality both in- and outside of the pool. These headphones are also quite popular.

Swimming Headphones Design: The Pyle MP3 Bluetooth swimming headphones feature a similar design to the Sony NWWS413BM and SwimBuds All-In-One MP3 swimming headphones. These feature the standard in-ear bud design and also work with an onboard MP3 player rather than an external one.

What I really like about these headphones is their flexible non-interfering design. This allows for lightweight and ergonomic headphones that can be adjusted to provide a secure and comfortable fit in the water, without getting in the way.

The headphones feature easy-to-use external control buttons on the side and also have an IPX8 waterproof rating ensuring that it can be used for swimming as well. Additionally, these headphones are great for other workouts as well.

They come in 2 standard models- an MP3 only variation and an MP3 and Bluetooth variation which is slightly more expensive. The Bluetooth variation will allow you to stream audio from other devices such as your phone as well through some of your favorite apps such as Spotify or iTunes for example. As mentioned before, the Bluetooth feature will only work outside of the water.

Additionally, the device features an impressive battery life allowing for up to 10 hours of playback time.

Audio Profiles: The Pyle MP3 swimming sport headphones feature the easy drag and drop functionality allowing you to quickly transfer music from iTunes or your computer onto your device for listening.

Furthermore, it supports all popular audio formats, namely MP3, WMA, APE, and FLAC. As already mentioned, you’ll also be able to use this device with popular streaming services outside of the water, hence you opt to go with the Bluetooth variation.

In total, the Pyle swimming headphones feature an impressive 8GB of memory allowing you to store up to 2000 songs directly on your device.

Downsides: As mentioned the Pyle MP3 swimming sport headphones come in at a much lower price than some of the other models on our list- which is great- but also offers room for flaws. Reviews for this device’s usage in the pool are overwhelmingly positive, but it does seem that in some cases the device may give out prematurely.

We should also mention that these headphones use swim specific buds to protect the device from water damage. Thus, if you change these buds and hop in the pool your device will most likely receive water damage.

Swimming Headphone Quick Specifications-

  • Headphone Design: In-Ear Buds.
  • Onboard MP3 Player: Yes.
  • Audio Profiles: MP3, APE, FLAC, WMA.
  • Waterproof Rating: IPX8.
  • Storage: 8GB.
  • Battery-Life: 10 Hours.
  • Rechargeable: Yes.
  • Bluetooth Connectivity: Yes, Depends On The Model.

9. SwimBuds Hydroactive Premium Waterproof Swimming Headphones.

SwimBuds Hydroactive Premium Swimming Headphones

The Hydroactive Premium swimming headphones offer some of the best audio quality underwater while providing a secure and comfortable fit. That said, these are quite expensive for what you get.

Swimming Headphones Design: The Hydroactive Premium swimming headphones feature an in-ear bud design with the headphone wrapping around your ears and head allowing for a secure and comfortable fit.

These headphones feature a very hydrodynamic design and are easy to get on and off. Additionally, they won’t interfere with your other swimming gear such as goggles or caps.

The key features of this device, however, is the audio quality and durability. These provide some of the best underwater audio available and also feature a specially designed interior with multiple protection chambers making the headphones very watertight, allowing for superior durability.

Furthermore, you’ll receive multiple styles of waterproof earbuds to go with your swimming headphones ensuring you can find the perfect fit.

Downsides: As you may have already figured out- these headphones have 1 major drawback compared to some of the other models on our list, namely that they don’t come with their own MP3 player, despite being the same price- if not more expensive than some of the other models we have covered. This means that you’ll have to purchase a separate waterproof MP3 player if you don’t already have one in the case that you want to use these headphones.

Swimming Headphone Quick Specifications-

  • Headphone Design: In-Ear Buds.
  • Onboard MP3 Player: No.
  • Audio Profiles: Depends On External MP3 Player.
  • Waterproof Rating: IPX8.
  • Storage: Depends On External MP3 Player.
  • Battery-Life: Depends On External MP3 Player.
  • Rechargeable: Depends On External MP3 Player.
  • Bluetooth Connectivity: Depends On External MP3 Player.

10. SwimBuds Sport Waterproof Swimming Headphones.

SwimBuds Sport Swimming Headphones

The SwimBuds Sport is similar to the HydroActive Premium swimming headphones but offers a more classic earbud design style, meaning they don’t have that wrap-around design.

That said, the short cord and waterproof design of these will still make them ideal for swimming. Additionally, they come in at a lower price than the Hydroactive Premium swimming headphones.

Swimming Headphones Design: The SwimBuds Sport swimming headphones feature an in-ear bud design and come with 4 different styles of earbuds (in a total of 11 pairs) to pick from ensuring the perfect fit for swimming.

These headphones also offer superior audio quality underwater and feature a durable design ensuring a lasting headphone. Furthermore, they have a short cord design that will keep the wires securely tucked behind your head and out of the way while you are swimming.

As mentioned, these headphones feature a separate wire design, similar to the classic earbuds that come with modern smartphone devices. This can be beneficial if you are someone who likes a more low-profile headphone while swimming compared to the larger style offered by the Hydroactive premium headphones as well as the other MP3 models on our list.

Downsides: Similar to the Hydroactive Premium swimming headphones the main downside of these is the fact that they don’t come with an MP3 player. This means you’ll have to purchase an additional MP3 player to use your device with.

Swimming Headphone Quick Specifications-

  • Headphone Design: In-Ear Buds.
  • Onboard MP3 Player: No.
  • Audio Profiles: Depends On External MP3 Player.
  • Waterproof Rating: IPX8.
  • Storage: Depends On External MP3 Player.
  • Battery-Life: Depends On External MP3 Player.

11. H2O Audio Waterproof Swimming Headphones.

H2O Audio Swimming Headphones

The H2O Audio Waterproof Swimming Headphones are very similar to the SwimBuds Sport swimming headphones but do come in at a slightly lower price as well, making them a more budget style swimming headphone.

Swimming Headphones Design: The H2O Audio waterproof swimming headphones feature the classic in-ear bud headphone design with 2 wired cables running to each ear. These headphones offer great underwater audio and also have a strong and durable design with an IPX8 waterproof rating.

The H2O Audio headphones have a hydrodynamic design and feature a comfortable and secure fit while swimming. They also come with multiple earbud options and sizes to pick from ensuring you find the right fit for you.

A benefit of these headphones compared to the SwimBuds Sport swimming headphones is the fact that it utilizes a longer wire. This makes these headphones ideal for usage outside of the pool on other workouts such as running, cycling, or walking for example.

Another benefit to the longer earbud-style is the fact that you can use your phone with these while swimming. If you want to try that, H2O Audio also manufactures specially designed waterproof smartphone cases that clip onto the back of your swimsuit allowing you to use the headphones with your phone while swimming without causing any stroke issues. You can check them out on Amazon by clicking here.

Downsides: Similar to the last few swimming headphones we’ve covered, the main downside of these is the fact that they don’t come with an external waterproof MP3 player. That said, this one can be used in combination with H2O’s waterproof smartphone case removing the need for an external MP3 player and also allowing you to effectively stream audio from your favorite services.

Swimming Headphone Quick Specifications-

  • Headphone Design: In-Ear Buds.
  • Onboard MP3 Player: No.
  • Audio Profiles: Depends On External MP3 Player.
  • Waterproof Rating: IPX8.
  • Storage: Depends On External MP3 Player.
  • Battery-Life: Depends On External MP3 Player.
  • Rechargeable: Depends On External MP3 Player.
  • Bluetooth Connectivity: Depends On External MP3 Player.

How To Choose Swimming Headphones.

Below are a few important aspects to take into consideration when choosing headhphones for swimming to make sure that you choose the ideal swimming headphones for your needs.

Earbud or Bone Conduction Design.

The first step in choosing your swimming headphones is to decide what type of design you want to go with. Swimming headphones generally have 2 main design styles, namely bone conduction or in-ear buds which are similar to a lot of standard earphone designs.

Bone conduction headphones offer great audio quality underwater without the risk of water leaking into your ears and disrupting your sound. They also allow you to stay aware of your surroundings which are particularly helpful if you train in a team environment where you need to talk to teammates between sets or listen to your coach when giving feedback or describing the workout.

In-ear buds also offer great quality underwater and will allow for a more isolated sound. These are great for those swimming on their own that want to go with something simple and lightweight that still offers great functionality while swimming.

Size.

Size is an important factor to consider to make sure your swimming headphones meet your needs. Most headphones are designed to be hydrodynamic and won’t interfere with your swimming. That said, some models are slightly heavier and bulkier than others.

Depending on your preference you may like a more low-profile lightweight headphone design or maybe you prefer something a bit heavier and more stable.

Built-In MP3 Player Or External MP3 Player.

Deciding whether you want to go with a built-in MP3 player or an external MP3 player is also an important consideration to make. Generally, swimming headphones with a built-in MP3 player are slightly heavier but feature a more hydrodynamic design.

On the other hand, external MP3 players will sit nicely at the back of your head or swimsuit and will allow for more lightweight headphones on your head. Another benefit to external MP3 players is the fact that they usually offer more storage and battery life. Some may also offer extra functionality such as lap tracking- look at the SwimBuds Delphin headphones for example.

Another benefit to the external MP3 player is the fact that only the MP3 player has to be replaced if something breaks, instead of the whole device itself.

Out Of Water Usage.

If you are a triathlete or generally just an all-around active person you may also want to use your headphones for other workouts as well. In this case, you’ll probably want to go with something that works well both in- and outside of the pool. We discussed this for each model on our list if you need reference to which are compatible for out-of-water usage.

Additionally, if you want to go with headphones that can be used both in and out of the pool, then you might also want to pick something that can support Bluetooth functionality.

Waterproof Rating.

When purchasing headphones for swimming you want to make sure that the device has an IPX8 waterproof rating. Anything lower than this won’t last in the pool and will most likely get damaged after your first swimming workout.

Luckily, we’ve already carefully formulated our list and narrowed down all of the headphones to make sure that each one of the headphones on our list has an IPX8 waterproof rating making them perfect for swimming workouts.

Conclusion.

Swimming headphones are a great way to add entertainment to your swimming workouts and keep you motivated to swim longer and reach your fitness goals both in- and out of the pool. These headphones offer great functionality and audio without adding too much extra load onto your body while swimming.

If you are someone that swims alone, gets bored in the pool, or just needs some extra motivation to swim some fast intervals and grind out some laps, then adding some up-beat tunes to your workout might just do the trick.
